What is fasting?
Fasting is when you abstain from food. Spiritual fasting is when you stop eating, and you pray and read your bible for a certain amount of time.
It could be one day, three days, seven days, 21 days or, 40 days. It can be one day out of the week. It can be one meal a day.
It can be from 6 am in the morning to 6 pm in the evening. Or it can be from 6 pm in the evening to 6 am in the morning. It's really up to you and what the Holy Spirit is leading you to do.
I would say the time frame, and what you can or can not eat is not important. The important thing is that you focus on hearing from God during the fast.
I wrote a Guide To Fasting. Here are a few points that I touched on.

Fasting is to connect with God, and to hear from God. Another thing that fasting does is help us conquer our flesh.
We are spirit, soul, and body. Whenever we are trying to be in the spirit and be closer to God, our flesh will fight us.
Fasting is a way to make your spirit man rise up, and dominate your flesh. Because we fight our flesh every day to not sin, our spirit man has to be built up to make our flesh shut up.
Many temptations and desires will go away, sometimes completely after fasting.
Another reason we fast is to humble ourselves before God. Your saying to God that you are nothing without Him. You saying that you are not trying to be your own God, and do things on your own, in your own way.
Fasting can help you operate and function in the spirit better. You may be able to see in the spirit better. You may also be able to hear better spiritually. But like I said, it is not about that. The main goal is to draw closer to God without the obstacle of your fleshly nature.
Fasting also compounds your prayers, and gives your prayers a powerful boost. Sometimes a person can pray and it seems like the prayers are just hitting the ceiling, and coming back down. Fasting and the Holy Spirit give your prays that spiritually punch.
Fasting is really important. It's a spiritual discipline that should be exercised regularly. There are people who are not on the Lord's side who fast just a principle. Not to connect with God, but to make their spirit rise up for evil.
So if we as Christians are not fasting something is definitely wrong.
